Interview with Independent Fashion Label: House of Bilimoria
Passed down from her ancestors, Shilpa Bilimoria the Designer and Founder of House of Bilimoria ‘s love for tailoring grew from an early age. Immersed and surrounded by textures, haberdashery and traditional machinery, her inspiration came genetically.
Shilpa began to stitch at the age of 8. Graduated with a BA(Hons) in Design for Fashion and Textiles, her education she says is a formality. Her skill and experience is that of many years of hands on deconstructing and re-constructing garments.
Shilpa has a rich cultural heritage. Born in Canada with her roots being North Indian. Her father born in Mumbai and her mother in Kisumu, Kenya. And now a proud Londoner!
Traditional textiles, colours, ritual and clothing all play a significant role in Shilpa’s design aesthetic.
What inspires you?
I am inspired by travel and textiles. Worldly prints, weaves and vintage textiles that I find in all places. I have a great love for craftsmanship and artisan work, often the traditional techniques that were used from times gone by. It is this energy of the passionate crafts that were passed down from generation to generation that keep me inspired.
Describe your Brand in 3 words.
Elegant, Classic and Bohemian.
Who would be your dream celebrity client and why?
That’s a hard one! I’m going to say Jessica Alba, besides being gorgeous, she is a mother, a businesswoman on top of her acting career. She encompasses so much of who the House of Bilimoria woman is!
When did you launch your brand?
In London Fashion Week 2008 at the Museum of London.
If you could give one piece of advice to aspiring designers what would it be?
Stay true to your aesthetic and love of design even in times of having to conform to some sense of commerciality. In this time of fast fashion, and throw away trends, what will speak volumes is your true love of what you create.
What has been your greatest career achievement?
So far it has to be being published in the book ‘British Artisan Style’ by the V&A.
Thank you Shilpa!
