Do you live on a housing estate? Does every house on your street look the same? This is true for many of us and especially those of us that live in newer homes. Building large estates where every house has the same layout, floor space and outside area is much cheaper to do. With house prices so high and so many of us struggling to purchase a home at all, most of us can’t afford to patiently wait until the perfect, unique house of our dreams comes on to the market. Certainly not the first time that we buy.

This means that many of us live in homes that are the same as many others. Many of us also shop in the same furniture and home appliance stores, meaning that the insides of our homes aren’t just similar in layout. They are also filled with pieces that occupy other houses on our street. This is, of course, fine. If you are happy with your home, it doesn’t matter if it’s exactly the same as a million others. You live in yours, that makes it different. But, some of us want something more unique. We want our homes to stand out from the street and to reflect our own uniqueness in their décor.

First Impressions

If you want to make your home different and make sure even its first impression stands out, you need to take a look at your curb appeal. A bold new door and replacement windows from VPS can be great ways to make your home different. But, you should also take the time to give your front garden some colour and care. Even if it’s just a few steps down onto the street from your front door, you could tile them or add funky railings.

Change the Layout

Most homes feature a similar layout. Lounge, kitchen, and diner downstairs, perhaps with a playroom or cloakroom thrown in. Bedrooms and bathrooms upstairs with an office where ever there is space for one. Why? It doesn’t have to be this way. If you really want your home to stand out, change the layout.

If you’ve got wide hallways, why not add a desk or build a play area in them to make the most of the space? You could move a bedroom downstairs and create a trendy dining room on the top floor or add a library. Think outside of the box. Just because most homes you’ve seen have a similar layout, doesn’t mean they have to.

Be Bold

The best way to make your home stand out is by being bold. Use your favourite colours in your décor. Be eclectic and add things that you love, regardless of whether they match everything else in the room.

Add More of You

Your personality is what will make your home truly different. Include photos and artwork that mean something to you. Add accessories from places you have visited and things that remind you of your past. Add as much as yourself as you can to the finer details of your home, and it will only ever look like your home.
